Amy Cherry began her career at the Battle Creek Outdoor Education Center in 1986 as an Instructor Counselor in the School Camp Program. In the spring of 1987 she transferred to the Farm Garden Program and spent the following 23 years there. She became the OEC Director in July, 2010. Amy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Cincinnati and a Master’s degree in Outdoor Teacher Education from Northern Illinois University. She is a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), is a Licensed Brain Gym® Practitioner, and is a Wilderness First Responder. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, she enjoys reading, swimming, walking with Max, the family corgi, and watching movies with her family; husband, Jason and their two teenage sons, Alex and Marshall.

Shannon ThorntonAssistant Director & Daytime Health Officer
Shannon Thornton was an Instructor Counselor for 20 years at the OEC and in 2009 she moved “indoors” to the office where she is the Assistant Director and Daytime Health Officer. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Resource Management from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Master’s degree in Outdoor Teacher Education from Northern Illinois University. Shannon has a continuing education certificate in Making the Grade in Diabetes Care: A class for School Personnel. She has completed the health department program Adminstration of Medication in the School Setting. Shannon is a Wilderness First Responder. She enjoys hiking and camping with her family; husband Chris and son Steven.

Bettina HastyProgram Coordinator
Bettina Hasty began working at the OEC in the fall of 2010 as an instructor and took on the Program Coordinator role in spring 2012. Bettina enjoys spending her free time here hiking and camping throughout Michigan, improving her motorcycle skills, or riding her bicycle around the camp trails. She grew up in Delaware and holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland. She taught middle school in Maryland and elementary school in Michigan, but now prefers to be outside! When not working at the OEC, Bettina can be found doing other adventurous jobs around the country such as playing in the snow in Summit County, Colorado, frolicking in the Appalachian Mountains, or sailing along the east coast on the schooner Lady Maryland.

Matthew SantnerEvents & Day Program Coordinator
Matthew Santner began working at Clear Lake Camp in the fall of 2009 as an instructor and became Coordinator in spring 2012. Matthew graduated from Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Geology. Previously, Matthew has taught outdoor education in Rhode Island and Illinois. During the summers, Matthew has directed the nature program at a boys camp in northern Wisconsin. When not teaching outdoor education, Matthew runs far.
